People who know me will tell you that in tough times I tend to look to the history of our Founding Fathers and history of our great country for answers.
My son e-mailed me today worried about the massive debt we are about to saddle his generation with. When I was his age, we talked in the millions and much later in life, we talked in the billions. Today we pass around the word trillions as if it was a manangble number. I am not even sure what comes after trillion. I do not want my son to know either. I think it is zillion though. Zillion it sounds like an Austin Powers movie line “One Zillion dollars” for the next generation to learn.
This quote from Thomas Jefferson is how I replied to my son,
"Then I say, the earth belongs to each of these generations during its course, fully and in its own right. The second generation receives it clear of the debts and incumbrances of the first, the third of the second, and so on. For if, the first could charge it with a debt, then the earth would belong to the dead and not to the living generation. Then, no generation can contract debts greater than may be paid during the course of its own existence."
I have always found great strength and wisdom in our founding Fathers. I am always humbled by the wisdom of their abitly to see into the future of our great country. Jefferson saw this national debt coming and has warned us not leave it for the future. Alternatively, as the new saying goes “Kick the can down the road.”
I finished the letter to my son with this. Paul I promise this can goes no farther down the road.
I ask all parents, I ask my generation to help me stop this can from going any farther down the road to our kids. I do not want my child or your child to hear you owe, Zillions of dollars to the government. Because the can was kicked to you. This can has been kicked long enough.
Send me to Washington for you. Not to bicker like a child, but to fight for you, to fight for future generations. I know what the stakes are.
