Idea guy looking for a money person.
Only a tiny percentage of employers would be qualified to hire me. I’d venture that 99% of those that are qualified don’t have the balls. I’m looking for the one-percenter.
I’m a smart guy with varied interests and talents, the greatest of which is dreaming of ways to prove people wrong when they say "It can’t be done!". The best motivation for me is to tell me that something is not feasible because of limitations that are "out of our hands". In my current job, I’m an IT consultant and website developer. In previous lives, I’ve worked in manufacturing, photo processing, scientific glassblowing, marketing research, and software development.
I don’t take "no" for an answer. I won’t listen to lame cop-outs like "that’s not the way we do things", or "nobody will buy it" or "it’s too expensive to do things that way" or "we’ve already thought of that".
No, I’m not naïve enough to think that every idea is a winner, or that great minds haven’t already pondered the questions. But I do believe that most of corporate America is too mired in short-term tactical thinking to allow long-term dreams to take root.
I dream of a world in which energy is almost free, and preserving our environment is not at odds with preserving our economy. I think that the companies who invest in these types of long term dreams will be the leaders of the next century.
What I’ll do for you:
I’ll dream up new ideas for ways to:
- Improve the efficiency of processes
- Improve the design and usability of products
- Leave the world in a little better state than when we found it.
What you’ll do for me:
- Provide me with excellent pay and benefits
- Give me a lab, and a generous allowance for equipment and salaries for assistants.
- Not pester me for endless status reports and project plans.
- Not expect anything marketable for a few years.
So, what do you say? You have a few million bucks extra to invest in innovation? You could throw it at a bunch of “suits” who would promptly waste it on lots of studies and endless reams of research and white papers. Or you could hire me, and get yourself a full time idea machine. |
