Soprano Amber Wellborn performs arias by Giacomo Puccini, Broadway songs by Kurt Weill, and well known traditional spirituals. Songs of Celebration from opera, spirituals, and theatre
The International Chamber Series presents Amber Wellborn in “Songs of Celebration,” chosen from opera, spirituals and theatre, on Friday March 25 at 7:30 p.m. The Series is sponsored by the Lewisville Lake Symphony in cooperation with the University of North Texas and the Town of Flower Mound. Accompanied by pianist Nataliya Sukhina, Amber Welborn sings arias from Gounod’s “Faust,” two operas by Puccini and “Rusalka” by Dvořák. She then switches to four of the most famous songs from Kurt Weill’s Broadway musicals – “My Ship” from “Lady in the Dark,” “Speak Low” from “One Touch of Venus,” “Trouble Man” from “Lost in the Stars,” and finally “September Song” from one of his early hits “Knickerbocker Holiday.” The concert ends with four spirituals – “Were You There,” “Heav'n, Heav'n,“ “Give me Jesus, “ and “Ride on, King Jesus.” The concert is free - a donation to the Symphony is welcomed – and takes place at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 5500 Morriss Road, Flower Mound (just south of Marcus HS, on the other side of the road.) For more information on the concert: www.lewisvillesymphony.org . Says Ms. Wellborn, “"This program is chock full of the things I love most to sing. This particular group of arias is heaven - long, flowy, indulgent lines and orchestration that is to die for. Then I get to go across the spectrum and enjoy my favorite Weill standards in a different style. The Spirituals are close not only to my heart, but live in my soul. The person for whom they were written is the same for whom I sing.” Amber Wellborn has distinguished herself as a soprano with a rich lyric tone and musical sensitivity. At the age of 17, she was featured in the National Public Radio program “From the Top,” hosted by Christopher O’Reilly and, at the age of 22, she won First Place in the prestigious Dallas Opera Guild Career Grant competition in 2008. Opera roles have included the title role in “Suor Angelica”, Mimì in “La Bohème,” Contessa in “Le Nozze di Figaro,” Miss Jessel in Britten’s “The Turn of the Screw,” and Fiordiligi in “Così fan Tutte.”
