Apparent Arson At Daffodil Park

Miscellaneous
Posted by kjudk1955 on 2011/3/17 7:57:27 (1081 reads)

At approximately 3:00 am this morning (Thursday, March 17) my wife and I smelled smoke and got up to investigate. To our horror we discovered a portion of the playground equipment across the street in Daffodil Park engulfed in a blazing inferno.

We immediately called 9-1-1, and a Lewisville fire truck arrived within about 5 minutes (it always seems longer). The fire was immediately extinguished, and I'm sure an investigation followed.

From my perspective, I can see no scenario where this was not a deliberate act of arson. It appeared that one of the metal trash cans had been placed under the tube slide, which is where the fire must have originated. (I will wait for the fire department's report before speculating much further.)

This fire was very large at the time we discovered it, and as far as I could tell later this morning (in the dark) it totally destroyed the tube slide, and severely damaged the flooring under the playground equipment. It also had to have scorched a major portion of the rest of the equipment.

The Daffodil Park playground is designed specifically for small children, who are the fire's ultimate victims. There can be no motive for this other than random, mindless destruction of city property that brings joy to young kids.

I confirmed with the parks department this morning that the fire department is investigating the blaze as an obvious case of arson.

Wow, that sucks. My guess would be that some bored teens did it for kicks. Hopefully there won't be any more of these.

I'm really sorry for the loss. Years ago, the same thing happened at Memorial Park and Castle Park with the damage at Castle Park being by far the worst. The slide at Parkway Elementary was set on fire few years ago. I think all of these were traced back to teenagers out in the middle of the night having "fun". I remember the heartbreak of my older son about the Memorial Park and Castle Park destruction. Even at a young age, he couldn't understand why anyone would think that arson was "fun". I hope they catch whomever is responsible.

The shade cover and slide at College Street elementary were burned 2 years ago. What in the world makes people think that burning playground equipment is cool?

I didn't realize this was so common. Perhaps we need to set aside one park somewhere explicitly for would-be arsonists to go and torch things. We can haul sub-standard condemned buildings out there, let people torch them, then the fire department can use them for practice. One section of the park could be for graffiti, and there could be a section for drinking malt liquor and throwing your bottles on the grass. On Saturdays, it could be amateur bomb-making day on the far end, and people could just be as destructive as they want without screwing things up for the rest of us.

(Yes, I'm just being snarky - not really proposing to build an arson park)

To quote a Kinky Friedman song:

"Most folks couldn't figure just why he did it,
And them that could would not admit it."

It's a question that, fortunately, most of us are unable to answer.
