TXU is offering free electricity. Catch: only at night. Why? Because not all kilowatts cost the same to produce. Night time electricity is cheaper, because it's mostly nuclear and wind, which have almost no marginal cost. Peak hours require more power plants online, burning more expensive fuel. Load shifting like this is good for industry and is why smart meters are a good idea.
