Municipal Election Results - May 12th, 2012 - Lewisville, Flower Mound, LISD

Local News, Notes and Events
Posted by WhosPlayin on 2012/5/11 21:10:00 (3407 reads)

Open in new windowIn Lewisville, Mayor Dean Ueckert kept his seat with a 71% victory over challenger Winston Edmondson. In the City Council Place 2 race, Neil Ferguson defeated 3rd-time candidate Steve Hill by 55% - 45%. Turnout was 1,985, with just over half of that in early voting.

In the Lewisville ISD race, former Trustee Kathy Duke achieved 62% in a 4-way race where only a plurality was needed to win. Paige Shoven made a strong showing with 24%, followed by June Ehinger with 9% and Tracee Ali with 5%. Trisha Sheffield pulled off an upset by defeating incumbent Vernell Gregg in the Place 2 race. Sheffield got 52% of the vote, Gregg had 40%, and Cornel Bekker got 7.86%.

In Highland Village, Pat Davis squeaked out a 51% - 49% victory over Bill Irwin in the Mayor's race.

In Flower Mound, the "NFL" team of Mayor Melissa Northern, Councilman Al Filidoro, and Councilman Steve Lyda were swept out by wide margins in a complete pendulum swing from 2010 when the trio ran on a platform of protecting Flower Mound from urban drilling too close to homes. This year economic development seemed to be the issue. Councilman Tom Hayden beat Mayor Northern by 64.5% - 34.4% in heavy turnout with 5,734 votes cast in that race - almost triple the turnout of neighboring Lewisville. Alan Cloud got just over 1% in that race. Bryan Webb beat Filidoro by 63.7% - 36.3%, and Steve Dixon beat Lyda 61% - 35%, with Jay Cannon garnering just under 4%.

Charter propositions passing: 1,2,3,4,5,9,10,11,12
Charter propositions failing: 6,7,8

The charter propositions that passed passed by wide margins in the 70-80% range. Those that failed failed just barely, with 1 - 4% margins. All of those that failed had to do with removing antiquated language that would allow either 15% of registered voters or 300 (whichever is higher) to submit a valid petition for referendum. Flower Mound's population is so large now that 300 would never be higher than 15%. Nonetheless, voters wanted to keep that language in the charter.

The Lewisville Texan Journal thanks the Cross Timbers Gazette for joining us in election night coverage of these races. We set an all-time record for page views here on Lewisville Texan Journal, with 28,192.

 Our predictions
OK, standard warning applies: Don't let our predictions determine whether you go vote or not. Don't take anything for granted. That said, here's what Brandon and I predict: (Under-votes not included in percentages)

Brandon Says:
Total Lewisville Voters: 1702
Lewisville Mayor:
- Ueckert: 1242 (73.8%)
- Edmondson: 442 (26.2%)
- Undervote: 18
Place 2 Council:
- Ferguson: 1004 (59.8%)
- Hill: 675 (40.2%)
- Undervote: 23

Steve Says:
Total Lewisville Voters: 1959
Lewisville Mayor:
- Ueckert: 1423 (73.0%)
- Edmondson: 526 (27.0%)
- Undervote: 10
Place 2 Council:
- Ferguson: 1160 (60%)
- Hill: 774 (40%)
- Undervote: 25

I'll take +/- 5% on my picks. We're pretty close, so we'll either both be right, or both be wrong.

Here's the last match-up between Ueckert and Edmondson.
Here's the last match-up between Ferguson and Hill.

 Re: Our predictions
So how did we do? Well, we were both within our 5% on both races. We were much closer on the mayoral race. Actual percentage for Ueckert was 71.23%. Brandon said 73.8%, and I said 73.0%, so he was off by 2.6 points, and I was off by 1.8 points.

We both under-estimated Steve Hill against Neil Ferguson. Brandon said Ferguson would get 59.8%, and I said 60.0%. Actual was 55.28%. So we're barely within the 5% margin.

As far as our polls on this race, although the percentages were exaggerated compared to the actual margins for Lewisville, every single one of our polls correctly predicted the winner. The Flower Mound polls were particularly accurate.

 We Predict Dean Ueckert Wins
With 73% in early voting, Dean Ueckert has what we think is an insurmountable lead.

 Other calls
Results are coming in slowly, but here are our calls for right now:

Lewisville Council Place 2: Ferguson with 55% - candidate has already gotten unofficial word.
Lewisville Mayor: Dean Ueckert with 71% - candidate has already gotten unofficial word.

Lewisville ISD: Place 1: Kathy Duke - pretty hard to overcome her lead for a plurality.
Place 2: Sheffield for the same reason. Gregg has served well. Thanks!

Congrats to all the winners across the area. Now for true voter fatigue with another two weeks of early voting for the primaries.

Seems winds of change are blowing. Wonder if that spreads to the primaries?
