Editor,

Denton County early voting begins May 14 and Election Day will be May 29. I would like to encourage my friends, neighbors and colleagues to support Will Travis for Denton County Sherriff in the Republican primary. Will came to my house, knocked on my door and he shared with me and my family the reasons he is running for Sherriff. I was extremely impresed, as Will Travis has not a political bone in his body. You will not hear buzzwords or catchphrases from Will. He has been blessed with a career in law enforcement as well as a successful business locally. Will wants to serve the people of Denton County and to that end he is out in the community meeting folks and knocking on doors to gain grassroots support. Again I would ask you to join me in supporting Will Travis for Denton County Sherriff. Will has my full support and endorsement in his campaign.

Scott R McDearmont, MD
Highland Village, Texas

Mr. Travis WAS in law enforcement...before he was FORCED to resign because he falsified an arrest warrant in Tarrant County and allowed a big-time drug dealer to go free. The head of the DEA called him a "bad apple". Guess that part was left out. Google it. It's there.

I had no idea. I met Travis and thought he seemed like an okay guy. Given that I'm related to the William B. Travis who fought at the Alamo, we're probably somehow related.

At any rate, I went looking as you suggested, and I found this:

There is also this website, put up by some unidentified individuals calling themselves Denton Citizens for Good Law Enforcement. There is another article reposted there apparently from the Star Telegram, talking about the same story.

The articles basically bring up:
- Lying to get a search warrant
- Lying to get into a sheriff's department official's wife's office
- Assaulting his ex-wife

They have a Facebook page where the profile picture is a Gadsden Flag. There is not much there.

These are very serious allegations, and other than the material found on the website, I've not been able to independently verify anything.

The funniest part about this article from Mr. McDearmont is that he thinks his endorsement carries weight. He has even been endorsing candidates in races he doesn't even have a dog in the hunt on. I guess it is good that his self confidence is high. I am glad he is no longer our Mayor.

Mr. Travis also has the distinction of being the only candidate in the race who is divorced and whose divorce records were sealed at his attorney's request. When asked about why he resigned from the DEA at a recent candidate's forum in Carrollton (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OvVbmqmIXk), he claimed he wanted to be a "great father" to his daughter. However, his daughter was not born until a year later. There are just too many inconsistencies in his story for me to consider him as a viable sheriff.

Before Sheriff Parkey came in we had a sheriff who was less than forthcoming (although he did have considerably more law enforcement experience) who gave Denton County a black eye, and we don't need another one. I'll stick to the candidate who has the experience that counts and who proven his integrity and honesty-Benny Parkey.

There may be issues with Travis as pointed out in several posts here but being divorced isn't a crime. Having any legal record sealed isn't a crime either. There seem to be plenty of real issues with Mr. Travis that these two points are without merit.

I agree about divorce. It's unfortunate, but it's so deeply personal that it's hard for a third-party observer to truly know what went on. Even if you did know, would it make a difference? What *would* bother me would be if there were any domestic violence or child abuse from a candidate.

That would bother me as well. Did you run a background check and find anything related to those? If not, his sealed divorce isn't relevant.

I'm running WAAAY behind on my normal background checks and such on the candidates this year. I did run one candidate today, and paid for a few more. We'll see what I can get around to.

I wonder if any of you anon bomb throwers have ever had to act where judgement puts lives at risk. Members of law enforcement use their judgement everyday and they are wrong sometimes. I have seen no proof that a crime was ever committed by Mr. Travis. I have to trust that he did what we hope all law enforcement officers do, make the best decision at that moment with the information available. And as far as his divorce records, that is a non issue in my mind. If divorced folks could not run for public office, we would have no candidates. I have seen no evidence that Mr. Travis was ever charged or convicted of a crime as it relates to his ex-wife. This is an incumbent trying hard to hold on to the political gravy train. Why do Sherriff Parkey and his political machine feel the need to lie about Will Travis' record? It is because his record as Sherriff is terrible with crime statistics in the county going through the roof!

Re: McDearmont Endorses Will Travis for Sheriff
While the number of crimes has increased, according to the FBI statistics the actual crime rate has gone down for the past several years. That's because the population has increased more than the number of crimes. So saying "crime statistics in the county going through the roof" is not accurate. It is a either a misrepresentation, or he doesn't understand statistics, and it has to be one or the other. I wouldn't vote for such a candidate in either case.

Travis has said in his forums that crime is up 43%. What he doesn't tell you is that population has increased 53% in the same period, which means the real crime rate has gone down.

So it looks to me like Parkey is doing pretty good, but he doesn't deserve all the credit, because the crime statistics include all the cities, not just the county areas. But no doubt Travis misrepresenting the data to make it look like the crime rate is increasing is deceptive.

Re: McDearmont Endorses Will Travis for Sheriff
I suppose if one considers jail to be a crime deterrent (I think it's weak), then a Sheriff could claim some credit based on how they run a jail.

But with just a small handful of deputies (I've heard 4, but not verified) on patrol at any given time across the whole wide county, I can't imagine the impact would be that large.

The thing is that a Sheriff can only do so much, based on the budget they are handed from the County Commissioners. So don't expect huge major changes from any Sheriff, unless you have commissioners who are behind it.

Re: McDearmont Endorses Will Travis for Sheriff
My main beef about Mr. Travis isn't really about any of this stuff, to be honest; rather, it's about his complete lack of any real substance in his positions. His entire campaign seems to focus on his name and his ancestor, as if being the quintuple great nephew of "the sick guy at the Alamo who died first" is some kind of qualification to be Sheriff of Denton County.

Travis mentions the historical connection at every personal appearance, and his website is practically a joke. Of course, I don't expect much more than a few pathetic attempts at conservative buzzwords on most of these candidates' sites, but there's absolutely no substance on the entire site. His home page and about me page both mention the "forefather" connection prominently, and his "Rich Texas History" page is just filler, a complete copy of the "famous" letter the original Travis sent from the Alamo (I admit I'm biased against it because I had to memorize it for some stupid reason in middle school.) But there are no issue positions or anything real to speak of except "I'm related to a famous Texan, therefore you should vote for me" and "crime is too high" at one point in the video.

In fairness, I did find this on the survey from the Cross Timbers Gazette:
Quote:
As Sheriff, I will create a interdiction unit on I-35 which will stops the elicit drugs coming through Denton County and seize the narcotic proceeds returning back to the Mexican border.

Yes, all [sic]. This has all the characteristics of a speech-to-text program.
