Lewisville Council to Contest Farmers Branch Landfill Expansion

Open in new windowOpen in new windowAlmost two years ago, we told you about the City of Farmers Branch's plans to expand its Camelot Landfill, which is located inside the city limits of Lewisville.

In last night's Lewisville City Council meeting, the Council voted unanimously to contest the expansion:

MOTION: Upon a motion made by Councilman Ferguson and seconded by Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Vaughn, the Council voted five (5) “ayes” and no (0) “nays” to authorize the City's legal counsel to pursue all actions necessary, including filing suit, to ensure that the Camelot Landfill complies with State and Federal Law in its current operations and to contest the expansion of the landfill. The motion carried.

At the time of our last article, City Manager Claude King had hinted at opposition by the city, saying that it would require a new specific use permit - which the city has not granted.

Reached for comment today, Councilman TJ Gilmore offered this statement: "Council objects to the expansion and we are exercising our legal options to ensure public safety and confirm that the landfill as stands is not contaminating the Elm Fork."

With regards to the contamination, Gilmore was referring to our article from 2010 regarding groundwater contamination where arsenic was found in a monitoring well.

Camelot's permit app is currently available for viewing at the Lewisville Public Library.

So that's what those binders are for. I had assumed Camelot Landfill was Stephen King's new book.

Legal expenses are a very sore point with Farmers Branch. They are already in for almost $5 million due to the "Make Farmers Branch all White Movement". Hopefully that will make them less likely to litigate, even though Lewisville should win any law suit, it will save us the fees.

I just started poking around about this. To my surprise, it appears that Farmers Branch doesn't have residential curbside recycling pick up.

http://www.ci.farmers-branch.tx.us/live/public-works/recycling

It looks like all of the cities around FB have curbside recycling pick up:

Carrollton: Bi-weekly
Lewisville: Weekly
Castle Hills: Weekly
The Colony: Weekly
Dallas: Weekly
Irving: Weekly
Coppell: Weekly
Farmers Branch: None - drop off only

I wonder how much solid waste would be diverted from the landfill if they did and how long that might extend the life of the landfill without expansion.

Perhaps they might redirect some of that hefty legal fee budget to funding curbside recycling program and everybody wins.

When Farmers Branch signed their contract with Waste Management late last year, the city opted out of curbside recycling pick-up. The City of Farmers Branch collected their own waste up to that point. It was my understanding that the city did not want to pass on any more increases to their residents when WM took over their servicing.

Curbside recycling pickup only adds approximately $3.00 per month to the monthly bill. That fee really depends on how bad WM wants the city contract.

The City of Carrollton residents actually receive points for recycling and those points can be used for movie tickets, golf passes, etc. I wish Lewisville had put that into our contract, which was resigned (I think) last year.

The DFW Landfill, in Lewisville, is projected to be closed in approximately 8 years.
