With High Temperatures Expected, ERCOT Urges Consumers to Conserve Power

Open in new windowAs North Texas enters a second day of triple-digit temperatures, ERCOT is urging conservation during peak hours to reduce demand on the state's electric grid. ERCOT, the state's grid regulator, expects that today's peak load will be 65,560 megawatts, and that the system should be able to handle the load without any emergency alerts.

As the load nears capacity, additional megawatts cost more per megawatt, and any unplanned loss of generation can cause problems more quickly.

ERCOT recommends the following conservation steps to take between the peak hours of 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.:

  • Turn your thermostat up by two or three degrees in the late afternoon.

  • If you will be away from home throughout the day, turn your thermostat up before leaving home in the morning.

  • Set pool pumps to run late at night or early in the morning.

  • Avoid using large appliances, especially hot stoves and clothes dryers, during the peak.

Lewisville Texan Journal hereby grants our readers the excuse not to cook or do laundry between the hours of 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., because we know that you all like to do your part.

Do believe it's a sunny day in NTX. If this is going on in Germany, why not here?

Well, we subsidize the heck out of nuclear and fossil fuel. This despite the fact that wind power jobs already overtook jobs in coal mining.

We've let China and others get the jump on us in solar production, and missed a heck of an opportunity.

Given our climate, and the demand curve that is strongly tied with the sun, solar is a perfect fit if the regulatory framework would catch up. Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) programs (that are enacted correctly) and required buy-back at market prices by the utilities would sure help.

required buy back is a big concern for the powers that be. would love to see some elected leaders actually lead and say it's time to do the right thing. re-election be damned! That last sentence was pretty funny!

Can we put windmills on the mountain of garbage? Oh,wait. We can't use windmills in Lewisville. They are too unsightly.

I sure wish we could. Couple years ago, I looked into this after posting a concept illustration:

I noted that they would be away from homes and populated areas, that they're close to transmission lines, and that the artificial height would help.

I think there were several responses I got:
- Can't build on landfill because the soil is not stable
- City doesn't own them
- Possible problems with birds if there is active landfill.

I still would love to see somebody see if there is anything that would be feasible.

They might support solar panels...
