Open in new windowYesterday, we were honored by a visit to the LTJ offices by Lewisville Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Leroy Vaughn, who shared his thoughts with us on the proposed ban on restaurant and bar smoking in Lewisville. Here's the video:

Could someone help the questioner please? He is not helping Vaughn enough. Planting words in his mouth and making this sound easy. They are both wrong in my opinion. I am not a smoker and my father died at 53 due to a 3 pack a day habit. But I still don’t think we should be telling businesses that they cannot allow their patrons to smoke. Sure, get air handling systems and have smoking and non smoking areas. But not a law that makes it illegal to smoke in the building. I have to agree with Gorena what is next? But I don’t say sweets or fried chicken. I say “what is next, you’re going to tell me I can’t smoke in my house or even outside”. You watch that is next. And to quote Vaughn the government of some states and cities are already doing it. This is just way over the top guys...

If you decide to work in a mechanical garage you are going to get grease on you. If you work in a bar you need to understand that you will get smoke on you and will breathe second hand smoke. But wait, from what I see a majority of the people that are in there working smoke as well. hmmm. What about that?

Leroy should be voted out of his office. He is voting for himself not for his constituents. How can you sit there and say that you will vote for a smoking ban in Lewisville without listening to the voters? I am not a smoker, but I feel that we or the City, County, State or event he Federal Government does not have the right to tell a private business owner how to run his business. If I go into a restaurant and there is smoking allowed I will choose not to eat at that establishment. I do not have the right to keep the owner or his customers not to smoke. What is wrong with this. The business owner should make these decisions about his business not the Government. What will be next? Someone in my neighborhood offended that I fly the American Flag? Will the City Counsel ban flying American Flags in the City? Come on people .... Smarten up and get with the program.

Your arguments are dumb.

Vaughn is listening to the voters, who are telling him overwhelmingly to pass this ban.

Where in the hell do you get this bullshit about banning the American Flag? Is it impossible for right-wing zealots to just debate an issue straightforward on the merits without resorting to ridiculous slippery slope arguments? The flag? Are you serious? Rhetoric fail.

Whos Playin is right on, only I would have used the word inane rather than dumb. I'll paraphrase your last sentence: Smarten up and listen to the program. This is from a former smoker and lifelong athlete who can't carry a golf bag across a parking lot without gasping.

I canvassed my neighborhood trying to get Mr. Vaughn elected, and look forward to doing the same if he runs for reelection. He made a point of not making his mind up until he heard from the constituents, and those remarks were, by far, in favor of the ban.

The government already tells businesses if they can serve alcohol, when they can serve it and to whom they can serve it so a precedent has been set. I don't see the difference between alcohol regulation and the regulation of cigarettes. It is not necessarily a second hand smoke issue for the servers. It is a comfort issue for non-smoking patrons that include children that don't need to breath second hand smoke. If you want to smoke, knock yourself out. Smoke at home. Smoke in your car. Smoke anywhere it is allowed and appropriate. If smokers would be considerate on their own [and I know many that are] and not smoke around kids and non-smokers in restaurants, there wouldn't need to be a ban.
