Open in new windowThe big news this week was that scientists at the Large Hadron Collider have now found the Higgs Boson particle, which had been predicted by the Standard Model of physics. What the heck is a Higgs Boson? I have to admit that while this Richard Feynmann fan is fascinated with it, I don't hardly comprehend it. Here's an article that explains it pretty well for the layman.

Here's a video that also tries to explain it.

Quantum physics is one of those topics that just boggles the mind, and yet is so cool to think about. Last night the kids and I were out for dinner and decided to go to Target and get some cat food for Becky Skittles. I realized that my kids watch "Through the Wormhole" with Morgan Freeman way too much when the oldest one asked me with a totally straight face whether Target still existed. "Of course they are still there," I said, puzzled. He then suggested that maybe Target only exists when we are there to observe it, and that it may blink out of existence at all other times. The younger one then said that if he worked there, it would exist longer - for the duration of his shift.

One of the best metaphorical explanations I've ever heard for explaining quantum superposition is to imagine standing a playing card up vertically on the table. Since it's virtually impossible for the card to remain standing on its own, there are two binary possibilities: It falls and displays face up, or it falls and displays face down. In our physical world, it's always one or the other. In quantum physics, both outcomes would occur, and the card would be in both locations at the same time, 50% in each. Only when you observe the card would it "choose" a final position and be either face up or face down.

Flower Mound Leader's Chris Roark has some preliminary information on Lewisville ISD's results for the State of Texas' new End-of-Course exams. We fared better than the state average. English scores were a concern state-wide. Writing scores were particularly lower in Lewisville and The Colony.

Lewisville Lake is at 520.45 ft, (93% full) more than a foot and a half low. At the current rate, without any significant rain, we're dropping about a foot every 20 days.

Video has been posted for July 2nd's Lewisville City Council meeting. I was there, although I was slightly off-camera, but I was sitting in front of the hooligans that were sneering and jeering at people supporting the smoking ban. They were extremely disrespectful and distracting to the business at hand. Although the audio in the video doesn't really pick up their snide comments and continual chatter, I assure you it was there, and louder than the typical whisper one might use in the council chambers during a meeting. The ringleaders were two Republican party precinct chairs: Failed City Council candidate Steve Hill and Tom MacKinnon , the latter of whom had the audacity to shout at the mayor, and call the American Cancer Society representative an "outside agitator". We'll have more on this, but I just want to say that it is embarrassing to have people act this childish at a meeting.

Fluffy and I just recently went down to New Braunfels for a float down the river on inner tubes. Apparently the big thing there is to bring a cooler full of beer, and float with it. Because some people are inconsiderate, clueless, S.O.B.s, the City of New Braunfels has had to institute a can ban to keep empty cans from littering the river. It's had an effect on business, but the citizens there made that choice by referendum. I think it was the right choice. Who wants to float in a dirty river? I support public whippings of people caught intentionally littering.

Know anyone who is down on their luck, and has kids that need clothes and supplies to go back to school? Christian Community Action has a Back to School program

Free burritos for a year? Maybe, if you're willing to camp out at Freebirds for their grand opening July 10th, and you're among the first 25 in line.

Re: Thoughts and Links on Saturday Morning
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend the meeting because of coaching commitments, but I watched the relevant portion of the video as soon as it was available. I too was repulsed at Mr. MacKinnon's behavior at the Lewisville City Council meeting. After a representative from the American Cancer Society spoke in favor of the ordinance, Mr. MacKinnon "objected" to her being allowed to speak, and the people with him applauded this "objection". You can watch his comments below:

Let me make a few things clear:

Firstly, the last time I checked, Mr. MacKinnon does not have the power to decide who can and cannot speak at a Lewisville City Council meeting. It's amazing that people so adamantly claiming their "rights" were being violated were so willing to restrict our most basic right, free speech, because they disagreed with the opinion expressed. The idea that this was simply because she wasn't a resident is ridiculous: If non-residents were not allowed to speak at meetings, many (if not most) business owners in Lewisville would not be able to speak about projects that related to their businesses. Additionally, the American Cancer Society represents doctors and patients around the country, including in Lewisville. Their interest is at least as viable as Mr. MacKinnon's, if not more so.

Mr. MacKinnon demanded that another person's freedom of speech should be limited, whined about "gross intrusions into our rights", and didn't seem to notice the steaming pile of irony he just laid on the podium. He seems to lack a basic understanding of what "rights" are, and I encourage him to learn the basics before returning to speak at a Lewisville City Council meeting. More importantly, I want to point out to anybody who might have heard Mr. MacKinnon's vile remarks that they do not represent Lewisville in any way. I was born here and grew up here, and I can assure you that the vast majority of us treat guests (as the representative was) with nothing but respect.

I can't apologize for Mr. MacKinnon's remarks, but I hope that the American Cancer Society can look past his bloated, inaccurate comments and see Lewisville for what it really is: a great city with leaders dedicated to a safer community.
