By Tamela Bowie If you were to ask me what spaces do I like to decorate the most, I would have to say it is decorating spaces for kids. I am at my “creative best” when I am designing kid spaces because it allows my creative and imagination juices to run wild. Decorating kid spaces still require the same elements of design, however, I can create spaces that can be a “little over the top” or a little bit “out of the box”. Whether you decide to decorate the space DIY or hire the services of an interior designer, these decorating tips can help to create a fun and exciting space for your child.
First, choose an inspiration piece for the space. It can be a picture, a pillow or a child’s favorite toy or tv character. In this space, the comforter was the inspiration piece.

Second, invigorate the space with color. Color will play a very important part in setting the mood and feeling of the space. Be sure to allow the child to participate in this part of the decorating process because they are the ones who has to sleep or play in the space. The color in this space was chosen because the teenage client wanted a more calm and sophiscated feeling.

Third, make the space functional. Make sure there is adequate storage, lighting and an area to do homework. In this particular space, the hutch on-top of her desk is not only decorated nicely but it is a functional piece of furniture in that it houses the client’s school books and reading materials.

Fourth, accessorize with style. Accessories are the finishing touches in any space. Make sure that they color coordinate with the space or if doing a theme design space, that they tell the story. Here in this space, the “glitz & glam look” is being carried through this whimsical chandelier mirror.

And lastly, personalize the space. Personalization creates ownership and pride in a child and it may help them to keep their room clean. You can embroider their initials on pillowcases or pillows, frame and hang some of their artwork or in this case hang their initials on the walls.

In closing, remember, when decorating a space for a child, be sure to try to create a space that will encourage growth and invigorate their interests and personality. As always, have fun decorating...always incorporate whimsy…It’s Haute!!!
