Aldi's Market to Open in Lewisville

Lewisville’s pro-business climate has scored again. A new building has been erected to house an Aldi’s Supermarket across the parking lot of the LISD Administration Building on the northeast corner of W. Main and Garden Ridge Blvd.

Aldi’s is a German owned grocery chain with a few wrinkles for us Americanos. Bags are either purchased at the checkout, or customers bring their own. If a shopping cart is used, a 25 cent deposit* is required, the deposit is returned when the cart is returned to the rack. Aldi’s management claims these measures allow lower prices at checkout. Whether that is the reason, or not, their prices are consistently lower than major grocery chains prices.

Credit cards are not accepted, nor are personal checks. Payment is required in cash or by Debit Card.

Inside the store customers will not see the brand names shoppers are accustomed to. The Aldi chain contracts for several different store brands.

Their eggs are priced at approximately 75% of the typical Tom Thumb or Kroger, but when they say Large, they mean it.

Other than the eggs, the poultry, beef, and pork products are high quality and priced 10% to 15% lower than standard prices found at major grocery chains. Dairy products are high quality and also priced lower than standard.

One peculiarity of the chain is some items in the frozen food sections are only available certain times of the year, or only once a year. One specific example is Gyros Sandwich Kits (outstandingly delicious!). These are available at midsummer, and only then. Also Wiener Schnitzel cutlets (frozen from Germany) seem to appear around Easter. Store employees just shrug when asked when items can be expected.

For any customer who wants to preview the Aldi’s chain, visit the Carrollton store located at Denton Drive and Frankford. The Lewisville store is tentatively scheduled to open in late September or October.

With grocery prices increasing across the board, this added competition is win/win.

*The original version of this story incorrectly stated the shopping cart deposit as $1 instead of 25 cents. We regret the error.

Cart Deposits are a quarter and not $1. The store brand packaging actually disguises brand name products such as Heinz, Kraft, Proctor & Gamble etc. Many of the frozen products are actually Marie Callendar and Kirkland (the Costco brand). Lot's of good German and other European delicacies like chocolate and coffee...

Yep, I'm pretty sure I've only paid a quarter (25 cents) for a shopping buggie too...and got the quarter back when I returned it. Unless the Lewisville ALDI is going to be charging more...but I can't see why.

Shopping baskets are only .25, you put a quarter in the box on top the carts handle it then releases the chain from being attached the the rest and then when you return the cart you reattach a chain and it pushes the quarter back out to you. Not a big deal. Also, anyone that has shopped there knows to bring their own bag it's also not a big deal. Their produce is usually pretty good and very good price. I don't care for the bread though.

Heaven helps us. A citizen post some information to share about a grocery store, gets an insignificant detail wrong, and now he is attacked for his "journalism". It is a blog. Get it? Nothing more than a blog. I bet you "Jim Collier" isn't getting paid, he is not a journalist, and does not claim to be one. Some other blogging folks were nice enough to pitched in with the correction, and now everyone has the info.

This ALDI's cart fee, for heaven's sake. Don't have a cow "about something as simple as the cost to use a shopping cart" as you put it. By your own words, it is trivial. This isn't crucial professional reporting on some new federal law. Call off your attach dogs for another day when it is actually matters, and not $0.75 difference for the deposit on a shopping cart that you are going to get refunded anyway unless you are not smart enough to return the cart where you got it.

Apparently you failed to read the entire article down to the asterisk at the bottom that says:

"*The original version of this story incorrectly stated the shopping cart deposit as $1 instead of 25 cents. We regret the error."

It says $0.25 NOW, but not until a few days ago. But it really is, as heaven help us put it, trivial either way.

Aldi has been around up north for years (around 30) and is the giant over in Europe. The carts use a quarter and are meant to cut down on labor cost and prevent damage to your vehicles. They have used this for about 20 years now and they have always used a quarter which is returned when you return the cart and reattach it to another cart in the corral. Products are all name brand which are labeled for Aldi. Not your average supermarket, but a good selection and no frills. I was a manager for them years ago and not much has changed since then.

Re: Aldi's Market to Open in Lewisville *This Week*
Aldi's opening for general public shopping is this Thursday, Oct. 11, at 9:00am. A ribbon cutting with other special events will occur on Wednesday.

Here is the press release:

Select Assortment Discount Grocer ALDI Opens First Lewisville Store October 11, 2012

Grocer Introduces Shoppers to Big Savings and Better Quality

Lewisville, Texas – Oct. 8, 2012 – On Thursday, Oct. 11, select assortment discount grocer ALDI will offer Lewisville shoppers a smarter alternative as it opens its first area store, located at 1585 W. Main Street in Lewisville. With more than 1,200 stores in 32 states, ALDI is known for high-quality grocery items at unbeatable prices.

“We are pleased to bring our first store to Lewisville to help customers get high-quality products at everyday low prices,” said Scott Huska, Denton division vice president for ALDI. “We challenge shoppers to switch from national brands to our high-quality exclusive brands and save up to 50 percent* without compromising. As important as price is, the only way to attract and keep shoppers is to have quality products.”

To celebrate the opening of the Lewisville store, ALDI will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, to which the public is invited to attend, sample ALDI exclusive brands and tour the new store. Additionally, guests can enter an on-site sweepstakes for a chance to win ALDI gift certificates and other prizes.

Customers can expect to find more than 1,400 of the most frequently purchased items sold under ALDI exclusive brands for prices up to 50 percent less* than traditional supermarkets. A model of efficiency, ALDI eliminates overhead costs by offering smart practices, such as a cart rental system through which shoppers insert a quarter to release a cart and receive the quarter back upon the cart’s return. Other cost-saving practices include a smaller store footprint, open carton displays and encouragement of customers to bring their own shopping bags.

To ensure its exclusive brands meet or exceed the national brands on taste and quality, ALDI conducts rigorous testing on all products. ALDI stands behind this quality with a Double Guarantee: If for any reason a customer is not 100 percent satisfied with a food product, ALDI will gladly replace the product and refund the customer’s money.

ALDI also saves shoppers money by keeping stores open during prime shopping times. The new location will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. ALDI accepts cash, debit and EBT cards.

The Lewisville store features high ceilings, natural lighting and environmentally friendly building materials – such as recycled materials and energy-saving refrigeration and light bulbs – to ensure that customers enjoy a shopping experience that is simple and easy to navigate.

A grocery retailer that has grown without merger or acquisition, ALDI opened 75 stores in the United States in 2011 and plans to open more than 80 stores in 2012.

Re: Aldi's Market to Open in Lewisville *This Week*
I am excited to have an Aldi's in Lewisville. I've been to the one in Carrollton a few times. I never bother with the grocery cart, but always bring in a bunch of reusable shopping bags, use those to shop with and carry my items out to the car. I also bought one of the extra large Aldi's shopping bags (I think it was $1.99) which is good for buying bags of chips. In addition to the boxed items, they have good prices on strawberries and apples and other produce. I've found that their prices are similar to Walmart's generic brand, but are available in some items that are not available in the Walmart generic brand (for example, some of the Kashi cereals). They also have seasonal special items that change frequently. Last spring they had a Magic Bullet type drink blenders for $17.99.

Thanks Jim Collier for the Aldi's review! Hope you haven't gotten beaten down by the haters making a stink about a small trivial mistake.
