Letters: Aerial Spraying is Less Risky

The West Nile Virus outbreak in our area is an unprecedented public health emergency. Bing Burton, the director of the Denton County Health Department is a very measured and pragmatic expert in public health. I have worked with Dr. Burton on the Denton County Public Health Advisory Board and let me assure you he does not take the recommendation for aerial spraying lightly. This spraying is certainly not a magic bullet, but is a more advanced step to help control West Nile. Everyday we make judgements based on a risk benefit analysis. I urge municipalities to support aerial spraying at this time because the risk benefit scale is tipped heavily in favor of spraying. The ravages of the West Nile virus are well documented. If there are measures that can be taken to limit the effects on our citizens, I would strongly urge support for these measures including aerial spraying.

There are things that citizens can do to minimize getting bitten by mosquitoes. They were laid out by the City of Lewisville and the CDC. jbcglc has pointed out that they work. Use common sense and have a modicum of personal responsibility, that's all it takes. Check around your house, business, and elsewhere for standing water and do something about it. Don't go out when mosquitoes are swarming [dusk and dawn]. Wear protective clothing and a spray or lotion with DEET in it. There are so many things that can be done without aerial spraying. Also, Dr. McDearmont, I don't believe that anyone said that Dr. Burton was making the aerial spraying recommendation lightly. Some of us are apparently concerned about the aftermath of the spraying because we have seen the aftermath of decisions like this in the past. If you want a very clear example, read Silent Spring by Rachel Carson. It's an oldie but a goodie and is partially responsible for the banning of DDT, another chemical that I'm sure that the risk benefit analysis or cost benefit analysis backed up for years.

An interview with a company who sells aerial spraying service to Dallas does not qualify as a "good Q&A on spraying". Their motivation is to make money by convincing people it is a great idea and totally harmless, thereby gaining public support. This is the last place to find for unbiased information. It is nothing more than a sales pitch, plain and simple. Look elsewhere for a good Q&A. It is definitely not at the link you posted.

If the county were to spray they should have done it in late June or early July, if public officials were truly wanting to prevent the problem.

I find it amazing that the personal responsibility and 'nanny state' folks aren't up in arms. This is easily prevented by using DEET. Just like the flu is easily prevented with a vaccine. As far as medical costs, the flu kills and hospitalizes orders of magnitude more people every single year.

Of course no one is asking the really important question. Will we be doing this next year? And the year after? The county is already planning a property tax increase, I'm pretty sure they don't have annual spraying at the cost of $1M or more a year in the budget.

Go buy a $3 bottle of DEET.
