Letters: Secession Petition Signers No Better Than Flag Burners

To those who signed the Texas Secession Petition, thank you for your honesty.

Your petition signature on the very week that America remembers the sacrifices that our veterans have made for our county, is a testament of you utter disrespect to those who have fought for our freedom

Thank your for bringing back bad memories of the flag burners of the 1960's. For it is your Secession signatures that have made you the flag burners of today.

You are a truly a disgrace to our country.

Thanks for the letter, Jeff. For what it's worth, I agree. I wrote my own piece that I've yet to post because I was so angry. This graphic pretty hits the nail on the head for me:

Lewisville Texan Journal has submitted a Freedom of Information Act request for a list of the signers of that petition. Although the White House is probably not legally obligated to provide it, the privacy policy that users agree to in order to sign these petitions notes that names and cities can be released.

If any of the local elected officials or party leaders signed that thing, they better pray that Mr. Obama decides not to release the names.

I am a past citizen of Lewisville and now live in the Texas Hill Country. I am here to tell you, sadly, that the secession movement is alive and well here. I was surprised by the number of people just 20 miles west of our state capital that bear a Texas flag bumper sticker with the word "SECEDE" emblazoned across the bottom of the flag. There are "compounds" out here that rival those built for our state and national officials in case of a nuclear attack or "militia-type" war. There are people here that, since Obama was first elected, began stocking up on ammo and guns because they felt threatened that their way of life was about to end because *oh ma gosh* a black man (actually mixed race) lives in the *white* house. There are also those here that base their desire to secede on some flawed idea that the treaty that made Texas a state is invalid. When I see these bumper stickers or here the blathering of the latter folks, I just shake my head in sadness. I probably look like the Native American man that was in the ecology commercials years ago staring at what was being done to his land with a single tear running down his cheek.
