I think we can all agree that tightening our borders would have been the ounce of prevention outweighing the pound of cure, but what's done is done. I think that for most purposes of a city government, we have to give people the benefit of the doubt, and basically assume that every person living here, whether or not they are a citizen of the U.S., is a citizen at least of Lewisville. When they violate one of our laws and cause trouble here locally, that is a good time to follow up and check their status. Also, for what it's worth, these immigrants, legal or not, are paying property taxes, sales taxes, and in some cases (when there is ID fraud or an expired visa) payroll taxes that they can't collect on. As far as the city is concerned, their taxes amount to the same as any other person with the same spending habits or property values. |
