| Why do we need constables? |
Poster: WhosPlayin Posted: 2012/5/21 23:39:31 I've seen that argument before, and there is some validity to it. It seems like anything a Constable could do, a Sheriff could just as easily do. By having separate offices doing the work, you will have some duplicate overhead, and perhaps some missed economies of scale and cooperation. But, the work still would have to be done, so if you got rid of constables, you'd still have to pay for bailiffs for JP Court, and Sheriff deputies to serve papers and handle warrants. So it's not a complete waste of money. It's just spent separately. We have had other positions in the Texas Constitution that have become antiquated and were removed. For example, County surveyor and State Treasurer. I guess if I were to take a step back and think about redesigning the Texas Constitution, I might have to reconsider the concept of elected law enforcement and judges. At the very least, those positions shouldn't be allowed to be partisan. Instead, you get on the ballot by petition and do not state a party preference. |
