Poster: JEhinger Posted: 2012/5/22 9:21:29 There is an issue of local control to consider as well. The sheriff is a county-wide office whereas constables are for each precinct. The constables' work is fairly delicate - serving lawsuits, enforcing judgments, etc. You could argue that having these functions administered at the precinct level allows for a greater degree of familiarity with the local population, perhaps reducing the risk of confrontation. Also, having an elected constable acts as an independent check on elected judges. |
