The guest expresses an opinion and is immediately told to shut down his or her speech because we don't agree with you - we invited you to hear your opinion but we don't care or want to find out why you think that way. Why is it so hard for political positions (both pro and con) to be explored by either party, or anyone for that matter, by asking each other questions without being called an idiot, racist, homophobe, fascist, etc., etc. Both sides of an issue are being presented by Americans - we are all Americans. How will compromise ever occur without understanding each others views of the issues. Too often, I think, we discount what someone says based on our first kneejerk reaction. Repeat the others position back to the person in your own words to be sure you understand what is being proposed. We may never agree, but we can still remain friends and fellow Americans and not have to hear someone tell us to "not let the door slap you in the ass". |
